ABOUT

My artwork lies suspended somewhere between automatic and surreal. I focus on the mark-making within the pictorial frame, while also attempting to bring in representational forms. Abstract expressionism more clearly relates to psychological experiences by offering gestures of color and space. While surrealism embodies the act of uncovering hidden imagery. I look to my dreams for content, as they are of higher consciousness. Dreams are obscured by waking life, and hold a truth that is worth processing. By welding these two contexts, I arrive at dreamy and mysterious imagery. Creating is more so about interacting with artwork as a window into alternate realities that are as enigmatic as they are enlightening. However, just as a window sits between oneself and the outside world, so do the physicality of paintings. I seek to minimize the boundary between the otherworldly and the observer.

Conceptually, I am concerned with the ideas of existence in relation to the human condition and seek to bring these concepts or symbols into my work. Though they might not be immediately recognizable, they do inform the tone of my work. As of this past year, my work has seen the introduction of floral forms. Flowers are a lateral subject to ourselves and the pains of existence. Fellow beings experiencing the world, emanating with a consciousness. They are more than merely a symbol, they are a prophet of being. Furthermore, I intend to offer portals through which others can seek contemplative opportunities from. These portals are to allow one’s shadow self to emerge. A work of art is successful when the viewer can interact with this window by comparing their own experiences with such. Contemplating on one’s own aesthosis and one’s own neglected humanness. When this happens, minds are opened, connections are made, and conversations spark. Though they might be windows into other worlds, they are still very much so mirrors reflecting oneself.

As one could imagine, creation might be stifled by days where intuition is hard to hear. These periods of time are made valuable by further developing previously planned ideas. And on days where passion is fiery, deep focus allows for easier access into the flow state. This is where intuition can be retrieved once more. These occasional moments of explosive creativity are the birthplace of new work. My studio practices range from painting with oils and pastels, to photography and graphic design. Just as intuition leads the creative process, it also chooses the ideal medium to express through. Recently, acrylic paint has been the easiest medium to work through as I now seek to combine photography with painting. Photography supplements the content by mystifying space and introducing floral forms in dreamy ways. This then hyphenated artwork is printed with a thin border to accentuate the likeness of a portal.
